Northeast India – Remote Mountain Villages in the Foothills of the Himalaya
On Friday, May 7, at 7:00, at the Downeast Diversity Center, 47 Foster St., Ellsworth; 669-4988;
Dr. Kenneth Senter will make a presentation on Northeastern India. Ken writes:
“In Sept. – Oct. 2009, I was in Northeastern India, an area connected to the Indian subcontinent by a narrow corridor: Nepal and China to the north, Myanmar (Burma) to the east, and on the south Bangladesh. The foothills of the Himalaya and mountains of Burma are divided by the wide flood plain of the Bhramaputra River. Remote hilltop villages in the clouds, spectacular scenery, and intriguing people – headhunters in the near past.
This area is not the India known to most of us. Its peoples are of different racial stock and culture. They want autonomy. Ongoing insurrectionist activity is tying down one entire Indian army division. We were permitted into the area with much difficulty and red tape. Gun emplacements, armored vehicles, and armed troops were in high profile. We did not get shot!”
Potluck refreshments will be served after the presentation.
